What: A trip to deliver 1,700 backpacks collected this summer during the WCRF “Pack a Backpack” campaign.
When: Leaving from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Saturday morning, January 2nd, 2010 at 6:30am. Returning to Hopkins on Saturday night, January 9th, 2010 at approximately 10:45pm.
Where: We will deliver backpacks to 5 urban and rural locations to children who will be starting their new school year the following week. Trip participants will distribute backpacks, play with the children at each stop, and accompany Love & Hope to feed the poverty-stricken community at Platanillo. Trip organizers Mark Zimmerman and his daughter Kirsten will also take those on the trip to visit a few historical locations inside El Salvador, and introduce them to some Salvadoran cuisine!
How much: Trip cost is $1,400 – this includes round-trip airfare on Continental Airlines, all ground transportation in El Salvador, many of the meals, all of the tours during the week, and trip t-shirt & khaki shirt…plus, our accommodations.
Accommodations: We will be staying at the Love & Hope Children’s Home in Nejapa, El Salvador. The orphanage is home to 28 very active children. Our sleeping accommodations will be in the unoccuried rooms in the childrens' dorms. Trip participants should bring their own sheets/pillows/sleeping bags.
Weather: We are going in El Salvador’s dry season. Forecast for every day of the trip (about 95% reliable): Sunny. High 85-90. Low 65-70.
Meeting: Trip participants will be required to attend a “pre-trip meeting” with the trip leaders in mid-December at a Cleveland-area location. Complete itinerary and trip details will be distributed at that time.
