WMBV - Dixons Mills, AL
91.9 FM
The idea for a Christian Radio station for southwest Alabama began in 1982. It started with a group of men at Central Baptist Church in Dixons Mills, Al.
There was a great need for christian radio in the area because there was none. That caused the church to nominate a committee of men to research the feasibility of starting a new Christian radio station. After much prayer, an effort began to secure a construction permit for a new radio station. The group ran into many delays and discouragements. Finally, the Central Baptist Church voted in 1987 to give the project to the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. MBI agreed to build the station with the assets secured by Central and with promises from area residents to support the on-going operation of the station. Land was cleared for the station in March of 1988 and WMBV began broadcasting on August 15, 1988 with 62,000 watts.
Rob Moore was hired as Manager, there was a part-time secretary and Alan Kilgore was contract engineer. WMBV is now part of the Moody Radio South Group and has grown to five full-time employees and seven part-time employees.
WMBV has operated with as many as four translator stations. In 1997, WMBU was born as a 100,000 watt sister-station of WMBV. It is located in Lake, Ms. and was launched as an outgrowth of WMBV. In 2005, WMFT began broadcasting in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Alabama area. Most recently, WRNF in Selma, Alabama began broadcasting in December of 2007. The growth of the Moody Radio South group is an outgrowth of the early supporters of WMBV along with listeners around the broadcast area who have come on board.
